  2. The former S&S on 1555 St. Georges Ave in Colonia (Woodbridge) was never an A&P. It and the former Bradless next door have been replaced by Home Depot. https://www.flickr.com/photos/62355920@N00/7547588638

  3. When Stop & Shop initially pulled out of New Jersey, it closed all its (remaining) stores on August 22, 1981. Kings purchased the following four Stop & Shop locations: Garwood, Hillsdale, Parsippany, and West Caldwell. A&P acquired the Stop & Shop locations in Bloomfield, Clifton, Edison, Newark, North Brunswick, Saddle Brook, South Plainfield, Wallington, Wayne, and Wyckoff, as well as an additional store in New City, New York. Newspaper reports in August 1981 stated that A&P would also take over Stop & Shop's East Brunswick store (at 233 Route 18), but that never happened; instead, a Foodtown opened in that location on December 6, 1981.

Surprisingly, Stop & Shop officials claimed that their New Jersey stores were profitable. But S&S decided to pull out of the area because it had too few stores in New Jersey in order to be competitive with other chains. FYI, the first New Jersey Stop & Shop opened in 1967.

Also, in contrast to what was commonly believed, the Cedar Knolls Stop & Shop actually closed prior to the chain's New Jersey exit; to be exact, that store closed on December 2, 1978, making it the first S&S to close in New Jersey. (A photo of the Cedar Knolls S&S appeared on Page E14 of the November 30, 1978 edition of the Daily Record.) The unprofitable store operated for fewer than five years, having opened on January 15, 1974. (The Cedar Knolls Bradlees opened on or around November 14, 1973, shortly before the S&S.) After Stop & Shop closed its Cedar Knolls store, the Michas Family relocated their Cedar Knolls Foodtown store from a smaller location elsewhere on Ridgedale Avenue. The new Foodtown opened its doors on January 31, 1979.

  4. The Highland Park store was actually a Pantry Pride originally - it opened in March 1971 replacing a Food Fair on the same property that was demolished. It became Foodtown in 1978.

The Somerset/Franklin Park store opened as a Finast in 1973, before becoming Mayfair-Foodtown in 1977. It was expanded in 1987.

  5. The location of the Brick Route 70 store, which sat vacant for years and then as an empty lot for more years, finally has an Aldi open, along with further development happening presently.
